So I was doing my rounds on my favorite architectural sites when I came across this house. The house is in Wisconsin and was done by the Johnson Schmaling firm. The reason for choosing this house to talk about were the lines, they are so precise and flowing. The Architects also made good choices in material selection as well. Di Fara Pizza

If you haven't been here you need to go check it out. Di Fara Pizza is a Brooklyn staple and is regarded as one of the best joints in the country. Whenever there are people waiting in line then you know something is either good or hyped but trust me it's good. The spot looks like it's in need of a renovation but I guess it all adds to the ambiance of the place. The old man Mr. Di Fara still makes the pies like he had been making them from day one along with the help of his family. Seems like he doesn't fully trust them with fully running the business just yet lol. If you live in NYC make it your business to check this place out. I think I ate a pie myself. Regular plain pies are $25 and slices are $5 so have stacks in hand.

I have so much on my mind right now. What to do? What's my next career move? When will I even begin to look since my field has been hit hard by this economic downturn? Decision… decisions. Sometime you just know when you have done and learned all you can at a certain spot and a new challenge is needed. I'm at that point in my life where I need to take my years of knowledge and apply it to a new environment. I'm the type who requires a challenge to succeed if not I get really bored and uninterested. I will admit I am somewhat scared to go but I’m also excited on the other hand to learn new information and gain new skills. First I'll solidify my architectural base that’s my main objective then I'll see where this photography thing can take me. As for friends I'll say this, if you aren't willing to grow with me you're gonna get left behind.

For some reason NYC has gotten somewhat boring and unexciting. Where have all the cool events gone? Everything seems so far and few. I remember when there were so many good things to attend that you didn't know which to choose. Stuff like this makes me think about what's happening to my city. I wouldn't say they aren't any events but rather they aren't worth me checking out. Seems like the ones I keep seeing or hearing about cater to a more mature audience which is cool but not my cup of tea. I need those art shows, the cool fashion, sneaker stuff, music etc. The summer isn't looking to good in that area at all. NYC where have you gone?

High Line Park

When the first section of the High Line Park opened on June 9th it was big news here in the city of New York. This was the culmination of 10 years of lots of planning, town hall meetings and construction. I remember when I first saw the early renderings on the news and thought what a cool Idea to use elevated train tracks and turn it into a park. It was intriguing from an architectural standpoint and just an all around cool idea.
These old tracks were first used back in 1934 as a way to ease the freight traffic on the ground and also the accidents that were happening at the time. The tracks were then closed as the industrial New York began to die. Fast forward now to 2009 with the rebirth of the High Line park in all its design glory. The landscape architectural firm, Diller Scofidio + Renfro headed by James Corner won the bid in 2004 and the design was ready to be viewed by the public in an exhibition at MOMA in 2005. Section 1 is now open from Gansevoort St. to 20th St. If you're in the area I urge you to check it out it's worth it. Stay tuned for our very own trip pictures.

Review: Mos Def-The Ecstatic

"This is Bedstuy 1982. 9th floor, three tiny rooms one view" (Life In Marvelous Times). Mos is back on his rapping shit. This is not the Black Jack Johnson Mos but rather the earlier Black on Both Sides Mos. Seems like he went in focused and really hungry to work or maybe even prove something to himself and to his fans that he still has it.
First off the beat selection was very well done. The beats immediately take you back to sitting on a stoop in New York in the 90's. There is definably a boom bap feel to the beats on this album and less rock influence unlike his previous album.
When listening to The Ecstatic prepare for a Mos Def who raps and when I say rap I mean rap with the hunger not seen from him in years. The album is a mixture of feel good music with some tracks dealing with some issues affecting today. Some standout tracks are 'Auditorium' featuring the ultimate story teller Slick Rick, 'Quiet Dog,' 'Life In Marvelous Times,' 'No Hay Nada Mas' which translates to 'there is nothing else.' Other notable mentions are 'Pistola' and 'Workers Comp.' The album is a all around solid and easy listening album from Mos. As a fan I'm very pleased with the outcome and I'm sure the rest of the fans will be too.

Sunglasses are a fashion staple for that summertime outfit or look. Choosing the right sunglasses is a big pain for many. You have to get the perfect pair that suits you, your face, and a pair that makes you glow so to speak.

Weather you go for the cool Coltrane look, the California skater style or something more high-end; make sure it fits who you are. I can't even begin to recall the numerous times I've seen people wearing sunglasses that were totally not within them and made them look utterly ridiculous. Sometimes they do it all for attention and just chose the most obnoxious model possible. Please promise me that this summer you guys make good choices in sunnies and make me proud.

So as I sit here on the throne I'm think about a lot of things. My career for one and where it's headed. The world of architecture is starting to get smaller and smaller. With the economy being the way it is it makes our world as architects vulnerable in many ways. No one is spending money to renovate and/or build new buildings really. Banks are so extra cautious that they aren't lending money so what is a young promising designer to do? Should I stay and withstand the tide? Or should I branch out for a bit and dabble into different areas? I know I can do clothing and photography but I’m not sure that's the route I want to go. Although I love both I feel that if I choose either as a career I might fall out of love with them. Maybe a good ole friend chat with my other designer friends is needed to sort things out since we all are feeling it. I also was thinking about going back to school to do my Masters in Architecture one day, not too sure if I can get into the studying frame of mind again though. I do know that there are decisions to be made in my future so be on the lookout.

New York city today is a mere shell of its former self. This city is losing its social character with this influx of well off youngsters who, because of their financial position, have caused native New Yorkers to have to change their way of living. Seems like everything is being catered to these guys. Whatever UN-New York thing they do is the cool new thing. The thing is don't come here and act like you've been here for ages and that you are the numero uno New Yorker. I see in the not so distant future all of us New Yorkers will be eventually pushed out or made to adapt to this 'New' York they are trying to make.

I swear my people have issues… From the way we act towards one another and other races to the way we can't seem to speak proper English or hate on other people for speaking properly. It seems that black people as a whole are lacking in key areas that we need to adjust. How did it get to be this way? Our great great grandparents always strived to be as educated as possible, to speak properly and be distinguished. Today, unfortunately, that has gone out the window! What makes people so unmotivated? How could anyone not want to improve themselves or their situation? I understand that everyone can’t be a scholar. However, education doesn’t only come from books. The fast-paced lives parents live today doesn’t help the situation either. All Parents, but specifically in the Black community, are so overworked and tired that they are missing out on precious time that needs to be spent nurturing their children and those children grow up to repeat this. This has become a vicious cycle that no one seems to have any answers for. I hope we find answers soon because this situation is only getting worse.

What do you do when your partner male or female is living a double life with the same sex? I was watching this movie called ‘Cover’ which went into the subject of DL brothas. It was a pretty good watch I might say and it had me thinking. I really think it’s disgusting and selfish as hell. More importantly that shit is dangerous when the parties involved aren’t wearing protection. With people not being honest and sneaking around…AIDS will never decrease at this rate! One excuse the parties in the movie made was how the African American community doesn’t accept gays so being secretive is the only option which is somewhat true. I feel though that a lot of these people are embarrassed and would rather think of this behavior as them being straight and like to get “freaky” on the side. A lot of these DL dudes are messed up in the head and I feel they need serious psychological help. All I’m saying is no dude better not come up to be on the low and tell me “you look like you got something in your eye, can I blow it out?” because it’s going to be trouble!

So I’m watching TV last Sunday and the big news was this captain who was freed from Somali pirates by the Navy. They were calling the guy a hero since he gave up himself so that the pirates would let his crew go. I’m not saying it wasn’t heroic and all but then I read another story in the Huffington Post where the writer did an interview with Somali rapper K’naan. The interview delved deeper into the story, not just the side the news keeps talking about. No one has ever really talked from a Somali point of view and reasoning. It seems like the media could care less. And why would they? They look at it like it’s just a bunch of Africans going crazy! If what K’naan says in his interview is true about the pollution, economic downfall going on in Somali and the UN and world leaders doing nothing about it then the bigger story is something that really needs to be addressed. Killing a few ‘Pirates’ certainly is not going to change anything and I’m sure it’ll only cause the situation to get worse. Here’s the link to the Huffington Post Article.

At what point would you say that your fashion sense is coming from blogs and or celebrities. I’ve been a member of various forums for years now and all I see are people wanting to know “When is this dropping?” or “what blank is wearing in this pic?” I mean is this what we have come to now? Does anybody atleast browse the forums to get ideas for things? It just seems that people go on, see someone wearing something they like and buy the entire outfit it right away. I mean have more dignity than that folks. I think style is so personal. Individual style is one of the best traits a person can have because it shows that you aren’t afraid to be you and just be comfortable in your own skin. Jackers shouldn't be comfortable jacking...I mean who really would feel comfortable being fake? We are in the day and age of the followers and until people realize it our leaders will be limited.

Done by Architect Natalie Dionne as her live work residence. This renovation was achieved by using an existing building, adding two additions in the adjacent property on front and back forming a U shape hence the "U-House" name. Apart from the existing brick She used dark wood on parts of the exterior which blend nicely with the brick. The interior and exterior spaces seem to flow seemlessly from one to another.

Took a few hours from my work today to see the first black president of United States of America get sworn in today. Today will probably be the pinnacle of black history from now on. To see how far we have come as a people you can't help but be proud. Now it is up to us to further clean our own image up and show the country and the world who we are and break those stereotypes. I'm hoping that blacks around the world and not just here in the States show that we are a race that has come a long way and will not be looked upon in any lesser manor. I've always been proud to be black but today my pride is even greater.

The market for my field is slowly shrinking. I can feel the walls tightening right now and I can't breath. So where do we begin? Okay Friday morning I decided to go directly to the Verizon store close to my job on Montague St. here in Brooklyn to see if I could snag a Blackberry Storm. Like any of the previous models, there was a buzz with this Blackberry especially since this was the first touch model. Although this was the case, I did expect what I was about to walk into. So I went to the store about 8:45 am, the store was supposed to open at 9:00am but as I walked into the store there was like fifty people already lined up and signed in already. I signed in and began to wait like the rest. As more people began to pile into the store I became restless since nobody seemed to be leaving with any phones. I asked the manager what was going on and he said that the system was down. I asked him how many Storms did they have and he replied they has and with 22. Now if my math was correct that means if I'm like number thirty or so I would not be getting a phone even though that was the case he proceeded to keep people there to order a phone to be delivered. I left immediately to go and order my phone at my office from Verizon's website. As the day went on and as I read the various technology blogs it seemed like this shortage was nationwide. Was it that Verizon shipped too little Storms? That seemed true until I read it was due to a software update that Verizon’s engineers could not fix in time for the launch so they had to downgrade the units to the older operating system in the meantime. At first I could not get why the stores were getting like ten units when the demand was so high. After reading why I knew the reason. My order was placed and I was merely waiting to for confirmation. Now I'm reading that if you placed an order before 2:00pm Friday that your Storm will be shipped no later than the November 25 and if the order was placed after 2:00pm that it'll be shipped by December 5th, also any order placed November 22nd or later will be shipped by December 15th. Wow great job Verizon, way to botch a launch. Although I placed my order before 2:00pm I'm still not optimistic that I'll get a storm before December. All of this run around for just a phone. Geez!!!

Evolution of Denim Part 2 & 3

Finally I get to update you on my denim evolution. It's been awhile but it's finally here. I've worn these things for awhile now non stop through various whether changes and seasons. At times I wondered why do it because they started to get an odor which I'd then have to fabreeze away.

So at this point I'm looking to update in about six months time that's when I think I'll do another wash. I might also update on another pair I've started to wear a bit as well, the black version of the S710XX the S718bk. This process might seem unusual to some since the denim is being worn for a 6 months plus period without any washes but this is the natural process. I'd rather evolve my raw denim this way than to buy an already distressed pair from the store. This way is more personal so stay locked for future updates.

Villa Storingavika is a home done by Saunders Architecture and is located in Norway. This House is just simply beautiful. The lines and the angles are done with such purpose and the spaces are grand and in some cases have a very cozy appeal. Where are my clients who are going to let me be creative with there money like this?

44th President

History was made on November 4th. Not only was there a new president of the United States of America but also, the president elect is black. That's right he looks like me. As I sat glued to the TV all night waiting for the results to come in, I could not help but think of the history of all of my ancestors who've been through things nobody could imagine and fought for this day to come. This does not erase whatever we've endured throughout history but it sure helps to paint a picture of the direction the country and most likely the world is shifting towards. Now that we have a black president now us who are of African decent have no excuse to make when it comes to fulfilling our potential. We can never go back to saying "well the white man did this or the white man did that." Those excuses will no longer be tolerated.

Who’d ever thought that in my lifetime or even this soon that we would see a black man run for president of the United States of America. Before this election I’m sure most of us never even thought this would ever happen. Now the time is upon us and the choices are here for us to vote. On one hand you have John McCain; a so called ‘maverick’ that has ran a smear campaign since day one and who seem to not connect with the real American people at all. On the other hand you have Barack Obama who has captured the American public’s enthusiasm and revived their faith in the ‘system’. They both have proposed total opposite policies so it boils down to whose policy you like the best and who you feel will make the better president. I’m not going to tell you who I think you should vote for but I would say this please get out there and vote and when you do go tell the next man or woman to do the same. I’ve seen lines around the block so it seems like voter turn out around the country is much higher than ever before. Oh and by the way OBAMA ya’ll!!!!!!

Is it just me or do kids these days have no sense, no manners, no morals and are just flat out rude. This shit annoys the hell out of me. You see these young kids everyday on the train or in the streets and the way they act is puzzling to me. Who are their parents? Do they really care? I mean how did this problem get so bad? I wasn't the the most respectful kid when I was growing up but I know my family did a darn good job raising me and teaching me right from wrong. They instilled the values I'd need in life to make good judgment. If not for what they tried so hard to teach me I'd be so lost. Growing up I really hated that shit, no back talking or else my lip would be a bloody mess. Respect your elders or else. Stuff like that was a general rule. These days the kids don't give a damn and they talk to anybody however they feel. The day I have a kid(s) and they bug out on me I'm gonna be whooping some ass.

Why do I hate this holiday so much? I'll tell you why. This holiday is just plain stupid. Kids getting dressed up to go get candy from people's houses, or the countless number of adults putting on costumes to see who can either look the scariest or the dumbest. I'm sorry I have never loved this holiday nor will i ever. I just think it's pointless and just another excuse for people to act a fool.

Siji Album Release & Fela Kuti's Birthday Celebration

On Thursday Oct. 16th my friend Siji released his long awaited album entitled Adesiji. Also that night was a celebration party for an African music icon Fela Kuti. The festivities got underway at about 9:30 pm with a performance by Jahstix. Siji came to the stage at about 10 pm and tore the house down with his energetic live band show. The crowd was definately pleased with the show. Props to the musicians on stage because they all did their thing. The night ended with Dj Rich Medina on the ones and twos celebrating the music of Mr. Kuti and his musical legacy in the world of african music and music in general.

I took the day off from work today. Last night I had this really bad headache which I thought would be gone this morning but it wasn't. Being at home is cool but when you don't feel good it's the worst thing ever. I'm just laying around watching TV and doing nothing. I can't even do any work on my personal stuff because when I try to focus I can feel my headache coming back again. I just hope this thing goes away by tomorrow because I have a lot of things to get done before the end of the week.

I really hated this thing but now it's like the best thing ever. I had facebook for awhile but I always thought it was a second cousin to myspace visually. It still is but the real reason why I love it so much now is that I'm finding a lot of old friend on there and it's great. I've found some friends back in Barbados or they have found me by surprise. It's like a mini reunion of sorts. This is going to be my new addiction for a bit but you know it all wears off after awhile though.

Album Review: Busy Signal 'Loaded'

So Dancehall Reggae has been pretty crappy for some years now. In recent years with a slew of new generation artist like Mavado, Vybez Kartel, Demarco, Munga, Busy Signal and others, the Dancehall quality has risen. The singles are top notch with more substance other than shooting and killing. The problem I have had with Dancehall albums in the past is that they have not been albums in their entirety. Rather, they have been more of an assortment of old singles thrown together to make an album. This has been the case until last year when Mavado released Gangsta for Life which was an album that had a concept with a few older singles and more new material than any Dancehall album has had in years. Since then, artists have definitely had to step their game up when it came to an album, which now bring us to the review of Loaded by Busy Signal. This is Busy’s second album but it’s full of new quality material with a wide array of topics. Busy seems to have got the memo on how to create an album and with his unique flow (mix of Dancehall artist and rap flow influence) he paints pictures of life as he sees it.
From the beginning, the album starts off running with ‘People so Evil’ which talks about people, their ways and the dirty things they do in life. The way Busy sings you can feel the words in his voice. His delivery is precise with every word and rhythm coming across as he would only want it to. This song paints a picture for the whole album. The album can be listened to with pleasure from beginning to end. Some tracks that stand out are ‘Jail’, ‘Fast, Fast, Fast, Fast’. ‘Real Jamaican’, ‘These Are the Days’ (my personal favorite), ‘Hustle Hard’, ‘My world’ and ‘Knocking At Your Door” -which is more like a usual Jamaican spoken word song but it’s story telling at its best. The Album rounds off with ‘Murderer’ and ‘Face Life’. Although this album has sixteen tracks it seems pretty short from beginning to end but it leaves you fulfilled. When albums are good, regardless of how many songs, they leave you still end up wanting more. I’d recommend any Dancehall lover to pick this album up but I’m sure you already have it so for the people who casually listen I’d definitely go buy it now that it has the NYshit stamp of approval all over it 4.5/5.

There comes a time in every man's life when he just has to put the vans away for a bit and pick up a pair of grown man shoes. Whoever knows me, knows that I never wear shoes at all but I've decided maybe I might shock the world and switch it up a bit in the future. I'm not going to go totally grown up on y'all but I'll gradually wet my feet. I've been looking at some shoes for awhile now and nothing seemed to catch my eye until one day I came across these beauties by London based company called F-Troupe while browsing the beast. So this morning I needed something mellow to just soothe my day. What better way to relax at work than to listen to the queen herself none other than Nina Simone. One album of hers I listen to the most is called 'Four Women: The Nina Simone Phillips Recordings.' It's filled with an endless array of her songs that will keep you occupied for hours. If you don't have it, you better get it. Pure goodness.
